Moving into a PG sounds really exciting, right? Having a roommate, independence,  making new friends, a new city, new college. But when you're a girl, safety is always at the back of the mind, especially when living away from home for the first time. But with a few tips and habits, you can enjoy your PG life without constantly worrying about your safety. Here are some simple yet effective safety tips to always keep in mind.

  1. Check your building's security system before finalizing it—your building's safety matters a lot. Make sure your building has proper gates, CCTV cameras, security guards, fingerprint-censored door locks, etc.

  1.  Lock properly—always make sure to lock your room (if you don't have a roommate) and your cupboard properly before leaving. Keep the keys in your bag, and keep a spare key somewhere safe and hidden.

  1. Know all the emergency contacts - Save local police helplines, PG owner’s number, and a few trusted friends on speed dial.

  1. Late-night safety—if you'll be late in returning home, always inform your warden or PG owner beforehand. Try not to travel alone very late at night, and always book trusted cab services.

  1. Digital Safety - Don’t post your PG address or daily routine on social media. It can make you an easy target.

  1. Few everyday essentialsKeep pepper spray, a knife/scissors, and a handy torch always in your bag.

  1. Be present and observe- If you notice any unusual or suspicious activity around, inform your PG management right away.

  1. Do a background check- Before finalizing a PG, check online reviews or ask current tenants about safety, cleanliness, and how management responds to issues.

  1. Trust your gut - If someone makes you uncomfortable, don’t ignore the feeling. Talk to the PG owner or move rooms if needed

  1. Know your area- Find out where the nearest hospital, pharmacy, police station, and grocery shops are.

Living in a PG is one of the most memorable experiences of your life. With a little awareness and a few habits, you can focus on enjoying your independence instead of worrying about risks. Remember, always trust your instincts and put yourself first.
