HIDDEN CHARGES IN PGs STUDENTS NEED TO BE AWARE OF
Posted on September 05, 2025 by Team RoomAdda
We all agree that shifting into a new PG is pretty exciting. But let’s be honest, nobody likes paying extra for some hidden charges you didn’t even know existed. So why pay extra? Just be aware of all the charges beforehand, and you won't get any surprises later. Let me tell you about a few charges that you should definitely be aware of.
Electricity ( Shock )
Many times, students think that electricity is included in their rent and they use it without even thinking, but Many PGs have this "fair use" thing, in which they'll charge you for every extra unit of electricity you use. So before you make your Antarctica, or leave the geyser on forever, ask for a clear breakdown of those utility charges.
The Food Fund
"Rent includes meals”, sounds like a dream, right? But some PGs might charge extra for that third roti you want or deduct money from your deposit if you miss a meal. So always check their meal plan before making any promises.
The laundry and cleaning scam
You might think laundry and room cleaning are part of the deal, but nope. Some PGs have a limit on how many clothes you can get washed a week; any extra items are charged. And don't even get me started on the "deep cleaning" fee they might add to your total when you move out.
The security deposit mystery
This is where things get really tricky. You hand over your deposit like usual, expecting to get it back. But some PG owners are pros at finding "damages" that are just normal wear and tear. Make sure you get a list of what's considered damage and take pics of your room when you move in and out.
How to become a pro at finding PGs
Read the agreement
That agreement they gave you? It's not just a formality. Read every single line. Look for words like "maintenance," "late fees," and "penalties." If there's no written agreement, run!
Ask the important questions
When you meet the owner, don't be shy. Ask direct questions. Ask all the things you doubt about.
Get the real tea from the residents
This is the best hack! Talk to the people already living there. Ask them what it's really like. They’ll tell you if the owner is cool or if there are any surprises. Their honest opinion is the best form of suggestion.
By being smart and asking the right questions, you can make sure your PG experience is all good vibes and no shocks.
