PG Life Hacks: How to Save Money While Staying in a PG

Posted on September 05, 2025 by Team RoomAdda
Let's talk about the real challenge most of the students face while living in a different city, which is, no, I am not about making friends or anything. I am talking about living comfortably while staying in your budget. Don’t raise your eyebrows; it’s definitely possible. Let me tell you a few life hacks that can really help you in saving money and staying in your budget (the saved money, which you can later use to buy that T-shirt or shoes, or bag you have really, really wanted for a long time).

  • Master the food game
Yes, we all agree that eating outside just slaps. But you JUST cannot eat outside every day. That not only will ruin your health, but that will also make your credit card statement taller than you.
Your PG's food might not be nice, but you can always opt for healthy, affordable snacks. There are multiple options like oats, Kellogg's, protein bars, and fruits. They’re way cheaper and healthier than ordering from outside.
And if your PG has a common cooking area, and if you know how to cook, then it's just a cherry on the cake. Team up with your roommate or PG mate and do late-night cooking sessions and have fun. That’s the best way to bond for real.

  • Be smart with your utilities.
Act smart; you are old enough to think about all the things that you don’t necessarily need and can share with your roommates. Like your subscriptions for Netflix, Spotify, Prime, and all other OTT platforms. Just share a single account and split the money. A win-win.
The main thing that people often forget about is electricity. If it's not included in your rent, then be mindful of the usage. Turn off the AC and geyser when not using them. Switch off fans and lights when you leave the room.
Don’t buy another gym’s membership instead of using your PG’s (if they have one). You can also ask if you can get any discounts on nearby gym outlets because of your owner’s connection or if your college provides a less expensive membership plan for their college students.

  • Change your transport habits
Daily commutes can dig a deep hole in your pockets, especially in a city like Bangalore or Mumbai. If your college requires daily travel, then opt for public transport facilities, like metros, buses, locals, etc. They're way cheaper, safer, and reliable. Avoid travelling in cabs.
If you have friends or roommates who go to the same place, team up and share rides. Splitting the cost of an Uber or an auto can save you a ton of money over time.

  • Master the Art of Budgeting and Tracking
Track your every transaction. Keep a small diary, or if you don’t like writing, then you can use your notes app on your phone also. Keep a record of every transaction, incoming and outgoing, so that when the month ends, you have a record of all expenses, and you can check and analyze where you spent the most and where you can cut down.
Splitwise is a very useful app for this purpose.
The most important tip: Before you buy anything, ask yourself, "Do I need this, or do I just want this?" This simple question can stop you from making impulsive purchases that you'll regret later.

Saving money while living outside doesn’t mean giving up your social life or fun. It's about being smart, making small changes, and being aware of where your money is going. These small tips can actually help a lot in managing and saving your money. You will develop a really important habit that your future self will thank you for.
