Finding the right PG isn’t just about a place to live till your college completes — it’s about making sure that place comes with comfort, safety, and the right vibes. When you’re moving to a new city for studies, for college, your PG becomes your second home. And let’s be honest, choosing the wrong one can actually turn your whole college experience into a bad one. That’s why it’s worth knowing exactly what to check before you say yes. From location to facilities, here’s everything you should keep in mind before finalising a PG.
LOCATION:Check how far the PG is from your college. Make sure there's a good facility of public transport because if your college timings are early morning or even if it's late, it's better to have your PG nearby for your convenience.
Rent and deposits: Confirm the exact monthly rent and how much you need to pay as a security deposit. Some PGs ask for 2–6 months’ rent as a deposit, so it’s important to know the amount upfront. Also, clarify the mode of payment and if the deposit is fully refundable. Complete transparency should be there.
Food quality and timings: Food quality plays a very important role. It can totally change your experience of the PG. If meals are included, check the menu and try tasting the food before you sign up. Ensure hygiene is maintained in the kitchen and that meal timings suit your schedule.
Cleanliness & Maintenance: Check if housekeeping is done regularly. Bathrooms, kitchens, and common areas should be cleaned frequently.
Wi-Fi Speed & Reliability: In today’s world, good internet is a necessity. 99% of your work will be done using Wi-Fi, and if the connectivity isn’t good, you’ll have to face a lot of problems. Test the Wi-Fi speed if possible and ask about downtime frequency.
Laundry Facilities:
Ask if they have a washing machine or if there’s an in-house laundry service. Clarify if it’s free or chargeable.
Safety and Security:
Check if the PG has CCTV cameras at entrances and corridors, a security guard on duty, and well-lit surroundings. It’s the most important factor to look for if you’re a girl.
Reviews from Current/Ex-Tenants:
Talk to current or previous tenants to get honest feedback about the place, the owner, and the living conditions. This can give you a more honest review than any other website or ad. This can also save you from unpleasant surprises.
Agreement/Contract:
Never finalise a PG without a written agreement mentioning the rent, deposit, facilities, rules, and notice period for moving out. Read the whole document properly before signing it to save yourself from any scam or fraud.
Rules & Restrictions:
Understand the curfew timings, visitor policy, cooking rules, and whether you can use your own appliances like kettles or induction stoves.
At the end of the day, the right PG should make you feel safe, comfortable, and stress-free. Don’t rush the process — visit, ask questions, and trust your gut before you commit.
